Videos (DVD's) of Herbert Brün Lecturing, Performing, Teaching
Thanks to the work of Maria Silva, Judy Lombardi, and Kord Russell, we have 70+ videos of presentations by Herbert Brün in various contexts: School for Designing a Society, Seminar in Experimental Composition, House Theaters, Performers' Workshop Ensemble. We are in the process of using digital technology both to preserve these traces and to widely disseminate them. The DVD made by Judy Lombardi of Herbert presenting on 'violence is a message' is one such example; in the future such videos will be available for free download.

Brün Graphics Exhibit in the Music Library, UIUC: in the 1980's Herbert gladly hung his graphics in the Music Library of the University of Illinois, where they floated, mirage-like, over the bookshelves. Twenty years later, they return: librarians John Wagstaff and Marlys Scarborough welcomed the Herbert Brün Graphics Exhibit in the Music Library for Spring/Summer 2007. An Opening of the Exhibit was held May 3, with presentations by Susan Parenti, Mark Enslin, and Philip Schuessler. For excerpts from the presentation, click here.

Graphics: Available for Sale
Herbert composed well over a thousand original graphics, now preserved in mylar envelopes. While a small selection of the graphics are in the Archive at the Akademie der Kunst in Berlin, the major part are at the Herbert Brün House in Urbana. These graphics will become available for sale and for use--in the upcoming year, photos of these graphics will be posted on this page.

Herbert Brün's Klänge Unterwegs (Wayfaring Sounds), the electronic piece composed in 1961, in the Munich-based Siemens-Studio für Elektronische Musik, is included in a rare CD recently re-issued by the Siemens Kultur Programm (original production was in 1994).The CD also includes works by Cage, Kagel, Riedl, Schnebel and others.

Teaching the ideas and formulations of Herbert Brün: The School for Designing Society, which Herbert helped found and where he taught social change through the lens of communication/anticommunication, offers classes for Fall 2007 in Urbana Illinois (www.designingasociety.org). Also offered is a month-long session in June 2007 of the School for Designing a Society in Hillsboro WV. For information, contact robscott@freeshell.org,

The Akademie der Kunst in Berlin will be offering a retrospective on the work of Herbert Brün this upcoming January, 2008, as part of their archival work on his traces. For more detailed information, click here.

Reel-to-Reel Tapes
Herbert has over 600 analog reel-to-reel tapes, recorded from the mid-1950's up to the early 90s. With the help of Paul Kotheimer and Scott Wyatt, we are in the process of reformatting some of these tapes to an archival digital standard. Work so far has yielded some 14 hours of archival quality audio files, with 7 of those hours being Herbert's theater music, as yet unavailable elsewhere.
